Compare Notion and Obsidian for notes, research, writing, collaboration and personal knowledge management.
Guide last updated 12 October 2026
Notion is a flexible online workspace. Obsidian centres on a local, Markdown-based collection of notes that you can link together.
Notion may suit you if
- You want documents, databases and task tracking together.
- You collaborate regularly with other people.
- You prefer a managed online workspace.
- You want dashboards without assembling a local notes system.
Obsidian may suit you if
- You want notes stored as Markdown files.
- You value links between ideas and research.
- You prefer control over where your notes are stored.
- You are comfortable choosing plugins and configuring your workflow.
Questions to consider
Compare collaboration, offline access, backups, mobile synchronisation, export formats, privacy and maintenance. Neither product automatically solves a disorganised note-taking habit. Try both with the same small collection of notes before migrating.
